This
fund was created to help the children of Sri Lanka, who were orphaned
as a result of the disastrous tsunami that occurred on December 26th
2004, which wiped out entire villages. Destroying the coastal communities
along the coastlines of several countries in Asia that stood in its path.
Entire families were swept away to sea, their
bodies consumed by the ocean, never to be seen again. The most
vulnerable victims are
the children. Children, who have been made homeless, left without
a family to turn to. Children without a mother’s love to comfort
them, and without a father’s hand to guide them. Imagine standing
in the midst of this turmoil not knowing where your family is,
or worse still, seeing your family being washed away by giant
waves, knowing
that they will never come back. News reports estimate that 40%
of the dead are children and thousands more have been left homeless
and
orphaned.
News agencies are reporting that governments
and aid workers fear that this huge number of displaced children
will bring forth child
traffickers, who will lure the children to go with them, with promises
of food, clothing and shelter, only to sell these innocent victims
to the highest bidder. At which time these children’s futures
are sealed, who knows where they will end up. A life of servitude,
prostitution, and crime are only a few of the tragic outcomes available
to them.
This cannot be allowed to happen to these children.
The aim of this fund is to build an orphanage in Galle, Sri
Lanka, to provide a stable home for these displaced children. The
fund
will provide emotional support, to help them cope with their bereavement.
It is not just a case of providing food, shelter and clothing;
a child
needs direction both emotional and spiritual. The aim is to guide
these children into adulthood so that they will become responsible
citizens who contribute to society. The fund will maintain these
children through to university. There is no telling how many future
doctors,
lawyers, engineers, teachers and other professionals there are
who have been orphaned right know. These children will never be
able to
reach their full potential if we don’t help them. These children
are the most valuable assets for the future of Sri Lanka.
